NHMS 8th Grade Play: The Enchanted Bookstore

NHMS 8th Grade Play: The Enchanted Bookstore

When the lights came up on the North Hills Middle School 8th grade play, "The Enchanted Bookstore," a magical world of fairy tales and story books was revealed to the audience of excited family members, friends, and school staff.

This was the first play performed on the NHMS stage, in the newly refurbished auditorium, which was craftily transformed into a bookstore. With sets that looked like multiple shelves of books, complete with a front door and cashier kiosk, one could believe it was an actual shop. As the story unfolded, one by one, the audience met characters from classic, beloved books, and the play came to life.

Robin Hood (Alex Geamanu), Tom Sawyer (Gerry Socha), Sherlock Holmes (Mihir Shah), Dorothy (Samantha Dame), Heidi (Makenna Larrabee), and Pollyanna (Savannah Astras), all brought to life by the Book Fairy (Gianna Aristilde), found themselves in difficult situations that they must resolve together. Bits of comic relief were delivered by Frankenstein (Constantin Trantow), Eddie (Zev Lorber), and Fingers (Luke Blowers), while many other students played roles that filled out the rest of the complex storyline.

Jay Schumacher, the drama teacher at North Hills, worked with these students all semester. The 8th grade play, which is always held this time of the year as the first semester concludes, is made up of the students who choose to take drama as one of their electives. It is a class that is held during school hours, similar to the eighth grade musical, which is a second semester course.
