A Win for the North Hills Middle School Forensics Team

A Win for the North Hills Middle School Forensics Team

In early December, middle school forensics students gathered from across Oakland County to compete in the annual Black Hawk Invitational at Bloomfield Hills High School, including the team from North Hills Middle School.

The North Hills Black Hawks were victorious, coming away with every member winning or tying for first place, leading them to win the overall competition!

“All of us were very dedicated to learning this,” said Lilly Berg (grade 6). “This was my first year, and a very new thing for me. I've always loved to act, and I've always loved to be on stage. I did the talent show every year! So when I heard about forensics, I was excited to do it. I think this is an absolutely incredible experience for children everywhere!"

Following their monologue auditions in October, the students began practicing twice a week through November. Each competitor was required to choose a category in which to perform, and then choose a performance piece. Coaches Mary Bogrette, Amy Bordes, and Jay Schumacher helped students select and practice their pieces for two months. “They were so helpful and encouraging," said Berg.

Berg performed a piece in the “Duo” category with Elle Schroeder (grade 6) from the classic story, “Alice in Wonderland.” “We had drama class with Mr. Schu,” explained Berg, “and we did a skit from Alice in Wonderland. He liked it so much he said that it would be a good piece for the forensics competition.” Berg and Schroeder performed the Queen of Hearts scene, each portraying several parts throughout the performance, and ensuring it fit within the 8-minute time limit.

Drama teacher and North Hills forensics coach Schumacher commented, “Just being involved with forensics gives you incredible experience with public speaking, building self confidence, and developing skills as performers and well-rounded individuals.”

The next forensics tournament will take place in the Spring, and the students are excited about working on new pieces. But for now, congratulations to the NH Black Hawks on their first place win at the Black Hawk Invitational!
